About Top in Town


Tanveer Jahangir Mohammed is the founder of Top in Town restaurant in Christchurch. He is the first person to start serving the world famous authentic Mughlai Biryani in New Zealand and Brisbane.

His passion for bringing authentic, aromatic and healthy Indian foods to customers started in 2006, when he started his small takeaway. This was not an easy job. There were many risks and Tanveer had no prior experience in how to create and run a successful food business.

At that time his small takeaway was unnamed but it quickly gained fame in Auckland. Customers supported Tanveer in expanding and he decided to ask his customers about suggestions to name this unnamed takeaway. One of the frequent customers suggested Top In Town and said that there can be nothing better to name the takeaway. Time soon proved the name to be pretty accurate.

At that time, in Auckland he had many celebrities visit his restaurant like the-then Prime Minister Hon. Helen Clark. Tanveer also did onsite catering for the World Record Holder S. P. Balasubrahmanyam show, who is known for producing more than 100,000 songs in over 16 Indian languages. From 2006 to 2011 Tanveer went on to scale and established 4 outlets in Auckland, 1 in Manuka and 1 in Palmerston North.

He then wanted to expand his business even more, so he moved to Australia and established his business in Brisbane in less than 14 hours! Even in Australia he quickly gained a lot of respect and fame. He expanded and created 3 more outlets. In Australia he has continued to cater for many celebrities like the whole Indian Cricket team. Legend cricketers Ravi Shastri, Virat Kohli and M S Dhoni have come few times to Top In Town for a nice meal.

Tanveer has also catered for the Gold Award winning medallist in shooting in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Now Tanveer is back to New Zealand where it all started. He has now established a uniquely designed and the REAL STREET style restaurant In Christchurch. For the FIRST time in Christchurch, Customers will be able to get sizzling hot food straight into their foods cooking right in front of their eyes on the Street. For this Tanveer had to work hard to satisfy all compliance norms to obtain consents.

Tanveer is a visionary and he thinks that this restaurant will be his best one yet. With a buffet, takeaway and dining. He plans to setup more than 50 dishes in the Buffett alone, and over 100 dishes overall.
